Over 600,000 hippies desended on the island in 1970 to see Jimi Hendrix head the festival.
The Isle of Wight festival is the first UK major summer festival we see on our calendars. The location and heritage of this festival are one of the reasons artists want to perform here. Its only 2 hours away from London yet the water creates a sense of freedom and escapism and the festival still has the same feel it had from its first one in 1968.
